CPCS Blue Card (Competent Operator)

The CPCS Blue Card Competent Operator shows employers that you are competent to operate a particular type of plant. That you have the skills to do the job, the HS&E training needed to do it safely, and real-world experience with a particular type of plant.

Blue Competent Operator cardholders have demonstrated their ability to work unsupervised, and may, in fact, be called upon to supervise Red Trained Operator cardholders on the worksite.

Moreover, the Blue Competent Operator Card has a five-year life and is renewable.

The Blue Competent Operator Card confirms you have demonstrated a level of health, safety, and environmental awareness through the CITB health, safety, and environment test, underpinning knowledge through a CPCS theory test, operating ability through a CPCS practical test, and operating competence on the type of plant evidenced by a VQ.

Blue Competent Operator cardholders have demonstrated their ability to work unsupervised, and may, in fact, be called upon to supervise Red Trained Operator cardholders on the worksite.

Furthermore, CPCS is required to phase out blue Competent Operator cards gained through Industry Accreditation from 1 January 2020. Also, any cards issued through transitional routes will be completely removed by 31 December 2024, more information.

CPCS Blue Card Renewal

• Hold an in-date Blue Competent Operator Card category or categories renewing
• Pass the relevant CITB health Safety and environment test within the last two years (must be valid on receipt of the application)
• Pass the CPCS Renewal test relevant to the categories that you are renewing (must be valid on receipt of application)
• Demonstrate ongoing practical operating experience through a choice of routes:
  • Logbook
  • On-Site Assessment with a registered test center
  • CPCS Practical test with a registered test center
  • VQ*
